Beyonce and Solange Knowles Team Up in Tokyo

They’re both successful soul singers in their own right, and earlier today (October 31) Beyonce and Solange Knowles teamed up for a promotional appearance in Tokyo, Japan.

The “Bootylicious” songstress and her “Sandcastle Disco” sister were spotted at the trendy Eight Million fashion shop in the Ginza district as they posed for the paparazzi.

Promoting their Samantha Thavasa handbag range, as well as their new pop singles, Beyonce and Solange are reportedly on a wistle-stop 72-hour tour of Japan.

And in related news, Beyonce’s new film “Cadillac Records” (in which she plays legend Etta James) is slated to hit theaters nationwide on December 5th.

Lil Wayne, Jay-Z and Ne-Yo brought major star power to Power 105's Powerhouse concert last night (Oct. 29) at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J., but it was a surprise appearance by Beyonce that stole the show.

The singer entered the stage during Jay-Z's set and performed the choreography from her new single, "Single Ladies," flanked by two background dancers. Though she didn't say or sing a word, Beyonce, clad in black stretch pants and a black turtleneck, drove the crowd wild when she flashed her extraordinarily large wedding ring at the end of her performance.

Ne-Yo's set featured hits like "So Sick" and "Miss Independent," plus guest turns from rappers Plies and Fabolous, who performed their verses on "Bust It Baby Pt. 2" and "Make Me Better," respectively.

Lil Wayne began his set fully clothed in a vest, flannel shirt and jeans but ended up topless. Many fans thought that Jay-Z would join Wayne for their duet "Mr. Carter," but he rapped alone on the track. Backed by a DJ and a full band including a female bassist, Wayne pulled out his own green and white Fender guitar and sang "Comfortable" in a highly off-key pitch. Still, fans sang along as he ran through "Ms. Officer," which featured Bobby Valentino, "I'm Me," "Please Don't Shoot Me Down," and "My Life."

Rapper and fellow Cash Money executive Baby appeared to duet with Lil Wayne on "Pop Bottles" just before the younger MC went into a spastic rendition of "A Milli." Hopping up and down during most of the song as he rhymed, Wayne was eventually calmed down by an assistant who cloaked him in a robe, James Brown-style. For a touch of comedy, he closed the set by lip-synching Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You."

Jay-Z was the evening's last performer and touted the most elaborate stage setup and a full band dressed in suits. A large TV screen hung from the ceiling above the stage while another three-part screen spread across the stage itself and behind Jay-Z as he ran through classics like "Hello" and "U Don't Know." The screen continually showed a montage of 1930s gangsters, continuing the theme of from last album, "American Gangster," as well as clips from Jay-Z's many videos.

After "Roc Boys" and "Lucifer," Jay-Z said he was only going to play "the sh*t that I like now." Tracks like "Can I Live," "Blue Magic" and "Swagger Like Us" followed, and Jay-Z reminded the crowd to vote on Nov. 4.

"This is the most important election ever," he said. "Rosa sat so Martin could walk, Martin walked so Obama could run and Obama is running so we all could fly."

  1. A Second Opinion: Rihanna
    By Joseph Neese

As an entertainment editor, I think part of me died this afternoon when I discovered that Rihanna now has the most No. 1 songs of the decade. Admittedly not the best metaphor, but I would describe Rihanna as the terrorist of the music world. She’s the perfect example of how profit-oriented the industry has become, choosing looks over talent in every instance. Jay-Z, who is the president of Def Jam Records under which Rihanna is signed, is married to Beyoncé, so he knows a thing or two about what a talented vocalist sounds like. But in the case of Rihanna, it’s as if he decided to sign the prettiest girl that he could find in an effort to use sex to generate as large a profit for his record label as possible. In comes Rihanna (who, while she does have a fantastic pair of legs, is not the Amazon beauty that people claim her to be), assaulting the music scene, given the best songs available.

All this for someone with the vocal talent of a 10-year-old girl playing Annie in your local community theater production - or perhaps less if you take “Unfaithful,” into account, which is perhaps the prime of example of how lackluster Rihanna’s pipes are. While high production can gloss over vocals more easily in an up-tempo song, it can only go so far when it comes to a ballad. Listening to Rihanna sing the slow song makes me think of a dog wailing in pain. She clearly has no vocal talent, squeezing out all of her notes. But most alarmingly, she has such an intense nasality that makes her tone breathy and immature for a woman of her age. So, she can’t pull off any adult lyrical content. (Why that wasn’t corrected by one of her producers, I have no clue. I doubt they care as long as she earns them money.)

Interestingly enough, however, up-tempo songs, like most of Rihanna’s hit records, contain vocals that are more difficult to execute than in ballads. This is why watching Rihanna live is a more painful experience than listening to her studio-recorded songs. I dare you to try to watch her Live Earth set from summer 2007 … if you can make it through it. It’s pretty bad when all your backup singers sing better than you. Watching Rihanna perform live is sort of like a painful audition on American Idol. You can’t really help but laugh, and you would be stupid to spend money on it. Read reviews of the Kanye tour from this summer - all the critics agree. As for her dancing, so-so.

I’m not going to deny that some of Rihanna’s songs are excellent. “Umbrella” more than deserved its Grammy nominations for song of the year. But, as I was reminded last weekend when I went to New York, there are thousands of people who have double Rihanna’s talent and can’t make an industry executive even notice them. So why not go back to how things used to be, when music was a sacred art form and the best singers got the best songs - not those who look best half-naked.

    Now that’s Rihanna

  2. Yes I agree 100%!!! But her catchy tunes are just as bad as the ballads to me because her voice is painfully irritating. I think nasal is a compliment.

& who deemed this song the hit of the decade? LOL! Scaryyyy!!! I hope it wasn't Billboard because Irreplaceable was the biggest hit of 2007 & not Umbrella... according to them & Yahoo Music. The links can be found on this blog. But I suppose since Hammer was the first rapper to go Diamond he's the best rapper ever? Ugh!

The videos near the top of this page have some of her Live Earth performance footage... all you could do is laugh. Hard!
